Mrs Isabella Beeton

Looked through my cookery books and cards for apple based recipes and chose one from Mrs Beeton's 'All about cookery.' This book has been in the family since it was published in 1905. I love to look at the well thumbed pages and see my Grandmother's handwriting on some of the pages. Made an 'apple pie creamed ' which entailed cutting a circle into the puff pastry top after cooking and adding the warm custard directly into the pie. The recipe ends with these words "It is rather an old fashioned dish: but at the same time, extremely nice" So it was considered old fashioned 106 years ago ! However, I must agree it was extremely nice. Mmmmmm
Now for the remaining windfalls............Decided chutney would use up loads so the choice  was Apple and Raisin Chutney. Chutney was introduced to the European markets in the 17th Century. Got my recipe from a 1970's book which is great for jam, jellies and chutneys.
All up to date with the apples and just putting my feet up for a cuppa when Mr came home with these...
He was passing the market at closing time and because the stallholder wanted to go home gave Mr 50 peaches for £1. Well he couldn't miss that bargain. Back to the recipe cards and books for peaches this time. Check later to see what I do .

  1. It's a good idea to try recipes from old cookbooks. Funny that the recipe was considered old fashioned all that time ago!
I'm looking forward to finding out what you did with those peaches! What a bargain.
